People are more likely to get killed when they drive their cars, a new study has found.
It also raises questions over whether car insurance coverage can protect people from being hit by a car.
“We think it is really important to think about safety,” said Dr Peter Atherton, a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield.
“People can drive a car, but they are more at risk if they are on a road that is narrow or they are not using the road properly.”
Dr Atherston’s research was published in the journal Motor Transport.
He said it was difficult to predict how much insurance cover people might need.
“The insurance companies would like you to think you can buy a car with a small amount of coverage but in fact, in many cases, you can’t,” he said.
Some people might not get hit by their car because they were travelling in a straight line, and they might not have noticed the driver’s front bumper.
However, people were more likely if they were moving along the same road, rather than turning left.
“It’s not always clear what is going on in the car and whether the driver was on their phone or on the phone at the time,” he added.
“If you have a road with narrow lanes, you could be hit by another car.”
Dr Chris Cairns from the University’s School of Engineering and Physical Sciences said the data showed people were far more likely in many ways to be killed in a car accident.
It also raised questions over how to provide more protection.
“Some people get hit in their own cars,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
“I don’t think they are getting the coverage they would like.”‘
Cars kill more people than cars’ It is common for people to think of the risk of being killed by a vehicle as less than the risk from driving a car themselves.
However in recent years, a number of studies have found that drivers are far more at-risk when they are using their cars for errands or other activities.
The latest data from the Insurance Bureau of Australia (IBA) shows that in 2015, people killed by cars were 4,500 times more likely than people killed in other road traffic accidents.
Of the 2,500 people killed, 1,800 were killed in road traffic collisions and another 1,000 were killed by other types of vehicle accidents.
The remaining 2,000 people were killed as a result of being struck by a train.
In the first 10 months of this year, 4,852 people died in road and railway accidents, compared to just over 3,000 in the same period last year.
“In some ways, the car industry has to be looking at itself to understand that,” Dr Cairnes said.
“They’re not doing enough to make sure they’re driving safer.
‘It’s a terrible feeling when your family is in a crash’ ‘It’s an awful feeling when you’re in a collision,” said the mother of a teenage boy killed by his father’s car in 2009.
When the family lost their son, they went to the police.
After the investigation, the family received a written apology from the driver and an apology from their insurer.
However, it was not enough.
The insurance company then sent the family a letter explaining that they had no liability insurance for the accident.
Dr Cairs said it raised further concerns.
“You could be in a road accident and you’re not wearing a seatbelt, and it’s not covered,” he explained.
“That’s just not right.”
What you need to know about driving laws The laws relating to drivers’ licences and car insurance cover a range of different aspects of driving.
Under the Driver and Vehicle Act 1959, a person is responsible for any damage caused by their vehicle if it is going “at speed”.
If a driver has to stop for a red light, they are responsible for that, too.
The laws also cover road signs and signals, and stop lights and stoplights and stop signs and stop signals.
Driver’s licences cover more than just driving.
It covers other responsibilities such as driving in a lane, maintaining the speed limit, and carrying on a conversation with other drivers.
There are also road rules about stopping for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
People can get a driver’s licence if they: earn £12,500 or more a year or a person who has lived in England for 12 months or more.

“What we do in insurance policy is set out what we think is the level of coverage that we expect to provide, what that level of protection would be in practice,” Dr Aetherton said.
